NSF Extending the Boundaries of Learning

Opportunities that take you beyond the classroom

At Northstowe Sixth Form, learning does not stop at the classroom door. As part of the Meridian Trust value of Extending the Boundaries of Learning, we actively create opportunities for students to challenge themselves, experience the wider world and discover what they are capable of achieving.

One of the most powerful examples of this is the opportunity for our students to take part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh.

Golden Ticket

As part of the DofE Gold all students were offered a ‘Golden Ticket’ to attend a weeklong residential at Aberdovery, Wales through ‘The Outward Bound Trust’.  They only needed to pay for 20% of the residential experience and the focus for the week was on adventure, challenge and teamwork.  Students step far outside their comfort zones — often discovering new strengths and confidence along the way.

For Jade, who studies Level 3 Dance Diploma and plans to take a gap year before studying Dance at a higher level, the experience began before the activities even started.

"I’d never done a journey that big on my own before, I travelled from Cambridge, through London then on to Birmingham where I had to change trains and navigate a local train to Aberdovey. Navigating train stations with suitcases gave me a real sense of independence and confidence."

Once there, the days were filled with adventure: canoeing across open water, abseiling down rock faces, completing expedition challenges and even taking the famous jetty jump. Students slept under the stars in bivvy bags, worked as teams and embraced every new challenge.

James, who studies Geography, Psychology and Biology A Levels and hopes to pursue an apprenticeship in environmental surveying, described the week as “exhilarating — a real sense of freedom.”

"You’re living in the moment. We motivated each other as a group and it felt like a detox from everyday life — we only had our phones for an hour each night which enabled us to focus on making friends and enjoying ourselves in other ways."

For Ed, who plans to study Psychology at university, the experience was both adventurous and refreshing.

"Sleeping in bivvy bags, spending three days and two nights out on expedition — it’s something you don’t forget. It gave me the confidence to think: I can do this… and I can try even bigger challenges."

The residential also brings together young people from across the country and beyond. Students meet peers from different schools, backgrounds and cultures, building friendships and perspectives that stay with them long after the week ends.

Karim, who studies Psychology, Sociology and Business A Levels, reflected on the lasting impact of the experience.

"It was rewarding and thrilling — even when it was a little scary. Taking that step made me realise that taking risks can lead to positive outcomes."

This experience helped them grow in many ways:

  • Communicating with new confidence
  • Developing resilience through travel, activities and new friendships
  • Building the belief that you can achieve anything you set your mind to
  • Stepping outside your comfort zone and thriving as an individual

The Outward Bound residential is just one example of how Northstowe Sixth Form students are encouraged to extend their learning far beyond academic study. Whether through national programmes like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, leadership opportunities, or real-world experiences, we believe education should equip students not just with qualifications — but with confidence, resilience and a sense of possibility.

These are the moments that shape young people, build lifelong memories and prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

At Northstowe Sixth Form, we don’t just prepare students for exams — we prepare them for life.
